Railways’ largest revenue generator is freight, which accounted for 65 percent of overall income in FY20, followed by the passenger segment.

This amount represents a 12.3% increase over the consolidated income for the fiscal year FY18-19.Indian Railways set a new record for freight loading in January 2021, with 119.79 million tonnes, breaking the previous mark of 119.74 million tonnes set in March 2019. Freight loading brought in Rs. 10,657.66 crore (US$ 1.44 billion) for Indian Railways, up Rs. 449.79 crore (US$ 61.13 million) or 4% over Rs. 10,207.87 crore (US$ 1.38 billion) in the same month last year.
Gorakhpur Junction Railway Station
Gorakhpur Junction railway station (station code: GKP) is in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, in the city of Gorakhpur. It has the longest train platform in the world. The North Eastern Railway’s headquarters are located here. The station is classified as a Class A-1 railway station.

History of the Gorakhpur Railway Station
The Bengal and North Western Railway built the 135-mile (217-kilometer) metre-gauge Gonda loop between Gorakhpur and Gonda between 1886 and 1905. The Kaptanganj–Siwan metre-gauge line opened in 1913 and runs for 79 miles (127 kilometres). The metre-gauge Nautanwa branch line, which runs for 25 miles (40 kilometres), was opened in 1925.
The Gorakhpur–Siwan segment was the first to be converted to wide gauge in 1981. In 1991, the Gorakhpur–Paniyahwa stretch was converted. Gorkapur-Gonda Loop was converted in the year of 1985, as well as the Nautanwa branch line. Around 2011, the Kaptanganj–Siwan line was converted.
Longest Platform in the World:
The Gorakhpur railway station was undergoing renovations in 2009. The remodeling project was finished on a war footing and on time. Gorakhpur now has a platform length 1,366.33 metres (4,482.7 feet) with the ramp and 1,355.40 metres (4,446.9 feet) without it, thanks to the inauguration of the renovated yard on October 6, 2013. Gorakhpur now has the world’s longest railway platform, measuring over a kilometre in length.

Gorakhpur is one of Indian Railways’ top hundred booking stations. It handles about 190 trains every day on average, with up to 473 trains on rare occasions. Kanpur Central, Varanasi Junction, Mathura Junction, and Mughalsarai are some of the major railway stations in Uttar Pradesh that handle considerable amounts of passengers.
